Alice Cosgrove started the league in the summer of 1945 and became its first president. The league started with approximated 50 members and eight member clubs: Green Hill GC, Worcester CC, Framingham CC, Oak Hill CC, Indian Meadow GC, Hillcrest GC, Mt. Pleasant CC, and Thompson GC.

The original mission statement, still in use today, states the purpose of the league is to promote interest in golf and to encourage the development of women golfers.

This award is presented to a member who exemplifies our mission with her extraordinary contributions to WCWGA and women’s golf.
